Teaching Artist Project (TAP) Registration Opens

The Teaching Artist Project, a program of the Community Word Project in NYC, will be virtual this year and offers sessions throughout August. This training program is designed for the advanced teaching artist, with at least two years of experience. Here’s some of what will participants can expect:

  • ​Expand your impact in teaching for social justice
  • Deepen your teaching with experiential, inquiry and reflection processes
  • Connect with Teaching Artists from around the country
  • Explore creative processes and critical thinking
  • Investigate techniques for project-based arts integration
  • Build new strategies for classroom management

Bechtel Prize 2020 – Submit by 1/31/20

Teaching Artists can enter to win a $1,000 prize from Teachers & Writers Collaborative. The format is different this year:

” this year’s prize will be awarded to a classroom teacher or teaching artist for an innovative classroom project that supports student development as creative writers and thinkers. We are looking for projects that get students excited about writing, seek to educate the imagination, and promote a vibrant and dynamic culture of literacy in the classroom. The project should be one that you plan to complete in the next calendar year (eg. in 2020).”

There is no fee to enter, but you must submit your project proposal by Jan. 31st, 2020. For more information, visit the TWC website.

Summer Institute for Advanced Teaching Artists

Summer Institute is a three-day intensive workshop conducted by Community-Word Project for creative writers, visual artists, musicians, dancers and theater artists with 2+ years teaching artist experience.

Summer Institute’s training curriculum is based on Community-Word Project’s “creative process” exploration methods, teaching practices and arts-in-education philosophy developed over 12 years.

Deepen your teaching practice:

  • Explore creative processes and critical thinking
  • Transform creative processes into effective teaching tools
  • Refresh techniques for project-based arts integration
  • Strengthen classroom management strategies
  • Cultivate environments of social change within classrooms
  • Learn best practices in the teaching artist field

Renee Watson Guest Stars in H-Town

On August 26th, and 27th, Renee Watson, author, actress, and teaching artist for Community Word Project, led a a series of workshops with the theme, Talking Back to the World: Empowering Students to Define Themselves through Writing and Visual Art.

High points of the training were a dramatization of The Emotional Bus (have you ridden on it before?) and a revision lesson using music from the Fugees. The WITS orientation is designed to inspire and prepare WITS writers for the new school year.
