WITS Houston writer Merrilee Cunningham spent three weeks of her summer vacation bringing creative writing to students in Macedonia. This international WITS expedition was organized by Amy Storrow, a Department of State member who is stationed in Skopje, Macedonia. Amy was the WITS Program Director in the mid-90s.
In three different cities in Macedonia, Merilee and local teachers planned and led summer creative writing workshops for students ages 8-15. Apparently creative writing is not a standard subject in the secondary schools of eastern Europe, and consequently Merilee was interviewed by dozens of journalists for print and media news.
While in the Balkans, Merilee reported back regularly about her adventures in eastern Europe, and you can read her blog by clicking here.
